They were all cameras...

This is a special sort of camera called a camera obscura.

It makes images by sending light through a little hole in the door. The image is projected upside-down on the inside of the van.

(This is inside the van) So, a camera is just a box with a hole in it?

Modern cameras are a bit more complicated. (but not much more)

In the photography department we use Digital Single Lens Reflex cameras (DSLR for short!)

They use digital sensors to capture and record the light that you let into the camera body.
