• The EXPONENT (3) tells how many times the base is multiplied times itself

• 4^{3 = 4 x 4 x 4 = 64}

• 6 x 6 = 36

• 6^{2 = 36}

•  $-2^{3\ }=\ -2\ \times\ -2\ \times\ -2$
