When identifying people, we often identify them based on their roles, age, or gender.
Roles: teacher vs. student
Gender: man vs. woman
Age: boy vs. man / girl vs. woman

Genre: homme vs femme / garçon vs fille
Âge: garçon vs homme / fille vs femme

To ask who someone is, you say:
Qui est-ce ? C'est qui, ça ?
C'est un professeur.
Qui est-ce? C'est une élève
C'est qui, ça ? C'est un garçon
C'est qui, ça ? C'est un homme.

To introduce someone, you say:
Je te présente OR Je vous présente
Je vous présente Monsieur Steury. C'est un professeur.
Je te présente Rima. C'est une élève
Je te présente Jayden. C'est un garçon
Je vous présente Mme Bachelder. C'est une femme.

Can some words be both masculine and feminine? Yes, BUT the article or extra -e at the end will often tell you what the gender of that person is.
Exemples:
un prof (m.) ou une prof (f.)
un élève ou une élève
un ami / un copain ou une amie / une copine
Note: when the word professeur is completely written out, it is masculine, but in Quebec they use une professeure
