What is Solubility Review
Solubility: the maximum amount of solute that will dissolve in a certain amount of solvent at a given temperature.
Solute = substance dissolved
Solvent = does the dissolving
Example: ____ grams of sald (NaCl) dissolved in 100g of water at ____oC
10
Temperature and Solubility
Temperature affects how much of the solute can be dissolved by the solvent.
Solubility curves: Are used to show how the solubility of a substance changes with temperature.
11
How to read Solubility Curves:
Find the line for the substance
The amount that dissolves at a given temperature is on the y-axis.
12
How much KNO3 dissolves in 100g H2O at 50oC.
Find the line for KNO3 (red)
Find the temperature and follow up to the line for KNO3 (green)
Read across to the y-axis and this is the answer (blue)
About 87g of KNO3 will dissolve.

Water Displacement
In the following image, a scientist is attempting to identify the VOLUME of the rock using water displacement.
What is the volume of the rock when the initial starting water level was 150mL and the ending water level was 156mL?
40
Multiple Choice
What is the volume of the rock when the initial starting water level was 150mL and the ending water level was 156mL?
150mL + 156mL = 306mL
The rock has a volume of 306mL
156mL - 150mL = 6 mL
The rock has a volume of 6mL
150mL - 156mL = -6mL
