Operations with Function Notation- Problem Sets

Show all work on pages 18 and 19 in your packet! Take notes and show work in your packet.

2

Let's review function notation!

Recall that the (in)put is always inside the parenthesis.

The output is also known as the y-value or f(x).

For example in f(3)=5

3 is the input and 5 is the output.

Example #2: In g(n) = 10

n is the input and 10 is the output.

Example #3 In f(x) = 2x

x is the input and 2x is the output.

3

Problem Set #1

  • Show your work on page 18 of your packet for #1 - 4

  • The next slides will give you guiding questions for each problem.

  • Submit each answer to check your work

Fill in the Blanks

#1) Find g(-3)

Guiding question: What is given input or output?

Substitute -3 into g(x) = x^2 +5

Use parenthesis around -3

Fill in the Blanks

#2) Find f(-2) + g(3)

Guiding questions:

What information is given?

Look at page 5 in your packet.

Set up 3 steps to find your final answer.

#4 find 3[g(2)]

Guiding questions:

What do you need to find first?

Multiply 3 times g(2)

Guiding questions:
What should you do 1st?  What does p(-10) tell you?
Find the output of p(n) when n=-10 and square your answer.

2.) Find the value of x for which f(x)=g(x).

Guiding Questions:

This looks more challenging than it really is. TRANSFER your skills.

Do you know what f(x) is equal to?

Do you know what g(x) is equal to?

Set them equal to each other and solve.
