Here are some simple rules from the elementary teachers and staff at SPPS.

  • Only one student down the slide at a time.

  • Go down the slide only.

  • Use both hands to climb and look out for other climbers.

  • Always tell your teacher when something is wrong.

  • Form a line and please take turns.

  • Include everyone at all play.

  • If someone is doing something you don't like, tell them to stop or move away from them.

6

For the elementary students grades 1-4...

  • Please look in the direction you are running.

  • Alert others when you throw a ball.

  • Kick only the correct ball.

  • Use all equipment properly.

  • YOU took it out of the bin, YOU put it back in the bin.

  • Know the games rules. Learn them. Ask Coach Johnson if you don't know.

Open Ended

What are some injuries you have seen or experienced yourself?

14

All of those injuries can and will be healed quickly if following the doctors orders, except maybe broken bones. They may impair you from returning to action, but the time off will earn you perspective.

But let's talk about the most serious of injuries. Injuries to the head.

15

Head injuries are called CONCUSSIONS

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury—or TBI—caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth.

16

What Happens in a Concussion?

  • The skull helps protect the brain from injury. .

  • Spinal fluid cushions the brain inside the skull

  • A blow or jolt to the head can hurt the brain directly or make the brain move around and bang up against the hard bone of the skull.

  • This changes the signals between nerves, which causes concussion symptoms.

17

Symptoms of a Concussion

  • headache

  • blurred vision

  • confusion

  • slow to answer questions

  • slurred speech

  • nausea or vomiting

  • not remembering what happened

18

Teens may also

  • have trouble focusing

  • have learning or memory problems

  • have a headache that gets worse

  • have sleep problems

  • feel sad, angered or easily irritable

19

Seek medical help if you

  • have that severe headache that will not stop

  • have a seizure

  • pass out

  • have other symptoms (such as continued vomiting) that worry you

20

Treatment of Councussions

Most activities which involve concentration are going to need to be diminished. This is for at least a couple of days. All sports are also done. No need to get back out there and possibly ruin your health. No loud music, so no wearing earbuds. Nap as needed. Rest will be the most important thing.

So let wear our helmets and also avoid those head to anything contacts that can cause a concussion.

If you think you get a concussion, know your symptoms and get to your health provider.
