Equivalent Expressions
Equivalent expressions are expressions that have the same value
Ex. 1: 4m + 6 = 6 + 4m -- Commutative Property
Ex. 2: 2 + (4m + 6y) = (2 + 4m) + 6y -- Associative Property
Ex. 3: 5(m + 2) = 5m + 10 -- Distributive Property
Ex. 4: 6m + 3m = 9m -- Combining like terms

Parts of an Expression
A variable is a symbol, usually a letter, used for an unknown value. For example: x, p, or y
A constant is a number on its own; a fixed number. For example: 2, 100, or -3
A coefficient is the number that is multiplied by the variable in an algebraic expression. For example: The 2 in 2p, the 5 in 5m, the y in -8y
An expression is a mathematical phrase containing variables, numbers, and operations. For example: 2y + 5, 2(3p - 4) or 10 + 3p
