Notice what is happening to the main verb when we use did:
do we have to change it to agree with the subject?
This is called the Bare Stem of the verb:
To swim = swim
To eat = eat
To cheat = cheat

"did" is considered a "helping verb" sometimes we used the helping verb "to be" was/were instead.

How was your weekend?
- we never use did/was were in the same question.
