Question 1: b. What do writing the statues and commandments on large stones and coating them with lime signify?

15

Why writings on the stones?

  • Following the method used in Egypt, they were to be prepared for writing by whitewashing with plaster.

  • When the law was written on the stones, the white background would make it clearly visible and easily read.

  • These inscribed stones were to offer constant testimony to all people and coming generations of their relationship to God and His law

Question 2b: Why did they have to build it with uncut stones?

18

Question 2a: What material did the Israelites have to use in building an altar? Why did they have to build it with uncut stones?

This was commanded because God did not want the glory of the stone carver to be the center of attention at His altar. God, at His altar, will share glory with no man – the beauty and attractiveness would be found only in the provision of God, not in any fleshly display.

Question 3: Why did Moses & the elders urge the Israelites to write all the statues & commandments of the law on the stones distinctly (clearly)? (v. 8)

20

Moses & the elders urge the Israelites to write all the statues & commandments of the law on the stones distinctly (clearly)...

  • The main reason for the setting up of the stones with the law written on it, was so the people could know the law themselves. The word "plainly" is added to the writing this time.

  • For people not conducting worship, it might be difficult to understand, if it were not written plainly.

23

What happened in verses 9-10?

  • In these verses Moses and the priests spoke to all Israel. The people were commanded to be quiet and listen with a view toward obedience (cf. v. 10).

  • "This day you have become a people" There is some discussion on exactly when the covenant begins:

    1. at Israel leaving Egypt, Exod. 6:6-7

    2. at Mt. Sinai/Horeb, Deut. 4:20; Exod. 19:5-6

    3. on the Plains of Moab, v. 9; 28:1

    4. at the crossing of the Jordan, Josh. 4:19-24

    5. at Gilgal (first camp site)

    6. at Shechem (covenant renewal), Josh. 8:30-35
