Properties of Acids

• tastes sour

• acids corrode metals

• positively charged hydrogen ions (H+)

Properties of Alkali

• tastes bitter

• strong bases are caustic

• negatively charged hydroxide ions (OH-)

• feels slippery

There is only a few properties given for children's understanding, but there are lot of properties for acids and alkali

The indicator

• Indicators are important for knowing if a substance is an acid or an alkali.

• There are two types of indicators

• One is the Litmus paper and the oher one is a liquid form of litmus.

Colour changes for indications

• In a red litmus paper the acid is red

• but the alkali is blue

• In a blue litmus paper the acid is red and the alkali stays blue
