HAY, ES, y ESTÁ
Knowing when to use "there is" and "it is" en español.

2
The word HAY is a great addition to your vocabulary! Some background:
It comes from the verb HABER, and actually has its own set of conjugations (which we will learn later)
It has two definitions: THERE IS, and THERE ARE.
You don't have to worry about switching or conjugating - it automatically changes meaning based on what you say!
3
HAY helado en el congelador.
THERE IS ice cream in the freezer.
4
HAY galletas en la despensa.
THERE ARE cookies in the cupboard.
5
Normally, we use HAY with nouns:
Hay un examen mañana.
Hay mucho tráfico en la calle.
Hay rascacielos en la ciudad.
6
If you want to ask a question, simply add a question mark. Remember, you will then be asking "Is there" or "Are there" in English:
????????????????????????????????????????????????????
7
¿Hay un rascacielos en Times Square?
¿Hay restaurantes italianos cerca?
¿Hay un metro por aquí?
8
And, just like in English, you can put HAY anywhere in a sentence that makes sense:
¿Qué hay para comer, mamá?
Prefiero sentarme donde no hay una ventana.
Queremos ver una película, pero hay una línea.
9
If you want to say "there isn't", you put the negative word BEFORE the word HAY:
No hay escuela el sábado.
Nunca hay jabón en ese baño.
No hay escaleras en mi casa.

There is one VERY important thing to remember:
16
HAY means "there is"
ES means "it is"
YOU NEVER USE THEM TOGETHER!!!!!
(Then you would be saying "There is is" - and that sounds....odd.)
17
Remember, we use "ES" or "ESTÁ" to say "it is".
We can use them with NOUNS or ADJECTIVES
If you want to say "they are", you need to switch to "son" or "están"
You still make them negative by putting the negative word IN FRONT of the verb
