STEMScopedia - Heat and Matter
This is a lesson on your STEMScopedia from Heat and Matter
2
Reflect
Our world is made up of elements, mixtures, and compounds called matter
Matter is affected by heat.
When you add heat to a substance you are adding thermal energy.
3
Reflect
The more thermal energy you add to a substance the faster its molecules move.
The movement of molecules is known as kinetic energy.
As the kinetic energy increases the temperature increases.
4
Heat
Energy transferred between objects at different temperatures.
Heat moves from warmer to cooler objects.
5
6
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space
7
Matter
Matter exists in three states
Solid
Liquid
Gas
Plasma is another state of matter but that will not be in our investigations.
8
Thermal Energy
The total kinetic and potential energy of the particles in the matter.
The faster the particles move the greater the temperature.
9
10
Thermal Energy
At certain temperatures different forms of matter will melt, freeze, condense, and vaporize.
11
Total Thermal Energy vs Temperature
Temperature is the average kinetic energy of all of the particles.
Total thermal energy is the total kinetic energy of all of its particles.
