France and Democracy

  • Between 1871 and 1914, France averaged a change of government almost yearly.

  • The Dreyfus Affair - in 1894, Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish officer, was wrongly accused of selling secrets to Germany. his life imprisonment divided people's opinions and resulted to public outcry.In 1898, the writer Emile Zola published an open letter titled J'Accuse! denouncing the army for covering up a scandal.

  • Eventually, the French government declared his innocence.
