How are decimals and place value related?

Review

How are tenths and hundredths the same? They have a specific place in the place value chart. The tenths are always to the right of the decimal point. The hundredths are always to the right of the tenths.

How are tenths and hundredths different? They have different values. The tenths place is ten times smaller than one and can be made with a fraction over 10. The hundredths place is 100 times smaller than one and can be made with a fraction over 100.

Reading and Writing Decimals

Knowing and looking at the place value of every digit is very important. You must know this to read and write numbers with decimals.

Say the whole number.

Say "and" for the decimal.

Say the number after the decimal.

Say the place value of the last digit.

Reading and Writing Decimals

2.13 = two and thirteen hundredths

The last digit of 3 is in the hundredths place.

1.5 = one and five tenths

The last digit of 5 is in the tenths place.

Write Decimals as Fractions

• The number of decimal digits indicates the number of zeros in the denominator.

• If you have one decimal digit, there is one 0 in the denominator. 0.6 = 6/10

• If you have two decimal digits. there are two 0's in the denominator. 0.06 = 6/100
