Simple, Compound, Complex

There are four types of sentences

Simple Sentence= a sentence with one independent clause (a subject & verb)

Compound Sentence= a sentence with two independent clauses joined by a comma and a conjunction (FANBOY)

Complex Sentence=a sentence with one independent and one dependent clause

Compound Complex sentence= is a compound sentence that has a dependent clause attached to one of the independent clauses.

Here are some examples:

The dog barked = simple sentence

The big mean dog barked at a cat in the tree= simple sentence


The dog barked, and the cat ran away = compound sentence


When the dog barked, the cat ran away= complex sentence

The cat ran away when the dog barked=complex sentence (no comma when dep. clause comes after ind. clause)
