El género y el número

• All nouns (people, places, things & ideas) in Spanish have a gender and a number

• Gender: masculine or feminine

• Number: singular (1) or plural (more than 1)

El género (gender)

The gender of a noun does not have anything to do with a noun being "girly" or "manly," it is totally arbitrary.

Plural nouns

Plural nouns have an "s" on the end (los libros, las amigas); add "es" for nouns that end in a consonant (las ciudades, los colores).

Knowing the gender & number of a noun allows us to choose the correct articles (definite & indefinite) and adjectives

Adjectives (description words) always agree in gender and in number with the nouns that they describe

Adjectives that already end in "e" do not change in gender (inteligente, sociable)

but they do change in number (inteligentes, sociables)
