PRONOUNS

• A PRONOUN can replace a NOUN

• Example:

• Mary = she; John = he; Mary and John = they

Verbs

• TWO types of verbs

• Action Verbs

• Linking Verbs

Action Verbs

• These verbs express action, something that a person, place, thing, or force of nature can do.

• Examples: swim, run, jump, dance, play

Linking Verbs

• Do NOT express action

• These verbs "connect" the subject of a verb to additional information about the subject.

• Any form of the verb "Be"

• Examples: Am, were, has been, are being is

Adjectives

• Adjectives are words that describe or modify another person or thing in the sentence

• i.e. DESCRIPTIVE words!

• Can be DESCRIPTIVE (red, tall, large)

• Or, can be LIMITING (high school, elementary teacher)

Adverbs

• words that modify a verb, adjective, or other adverbs

• Examples:

• Describing a verb: He drove SLOWLY

• Describing an adjective: He drove a VERY fast car

• Describing another adverb: She moved quite slowly down the aisle

• *** usually end in "ly" and answer questions, such as: "how", "when", "where", and "how much"

Conjunctions

• These are "joiners"

• They connect parts of a sentence

• FANBOYS

PREPOSITIONS

• A preposition links nouns, pronouns, and phrases to other words in a sentence. Some common prepositions are:

• at, under, over, of, to, in, out, beneath, beyond, for, among, etc.

• Example: The book is ON the table
