Fill in the Blank

When a ______ reactive metal pushes out a less reactive metal

3

Multiple Choice

What happens when iron is added to copper sulfate?

1

iron displaces the copper forming iron sulfate

2

nothing happens

3

copper displaces the iron forming iron sulfate

4

Multiple Choice

Which gas is produced when magnesium reacts with hydrochloric acid?

1

carbon dioxide

2

oxygen

3

hydrogen

5

Multiple Choice

Zinc is more reactive than lead

What are the products when zinc is added to lead nitrate solution?

1

zinc nitrate and lead

2

zinc lead and nitrogen

3

lead nitrate and lead

6

Multiple Choice

What happens when copper is added to a solution of magnesium chloride?

1

copper chloride is formed

2

magnesium is formed

3

nothing happens

7

Multiple Choice

What happens when zinc is added to a solution of copper sulfate?

1

nothing happens

2

zinc displaces the copper

3

the mixture catches on fire

8

12

REDUCTION

  • REMOVAL OF OXYGEN FROM A METAL

  • CARBON ACTS AS A REDUCING AGENT

13

Extraction of iron

  • haematite (iron ore)

  • Coke + limestone (remove impurities)

  • Blast furnace - temp of upto 1650 degree celcius

  • 4:15 to 5:15 GCSE BBC Science Bitesize - Useful Products From Metal Ores And Rocks - YouTube https://youtu.be/PvfnMxAJW_0

14

PREDICTING THE MASS OF IRON

  • Iron oxide + limestone+ coke --> carbon dioxide + iron

  • Predict the theoretical amount of iron produced

  • Iron entering furnace = amount of ore x percentage purity = 100 tonnes x 0.2 = 20 tonnes

  • Amount of ore going in = Amount of ore going out (CONSERVATION OF MASS)

15

Multiple Choice

Reduction is

1

the removal of oxygen

2

the addition of oxygen

16

Multiple Choice

Coke is made by

1

buring coal at high temperature without oxygen

2

buring coal at low temperature without oxygen

3

buring wood at high temperature without oxygen

17

Multiple Select

In the extraction of iron, the following are needed...

1

iron oxide

2

coke

3

limestone

4

coal

18

Multiple Choice

Why is limestone added to the furnace when extracting iron?

1

to make the temperature hot enough

2

to supply carbon

3

to remove impurities

19

Multiple Choice

To extract iron, a container is used. This is called

1

an oven

2

a blast furnace

3

a fermenter

20

Multiple Choice

How much iron metal could be made from 250 tonnes of magnetite (iron ore) with a purity where 30 percents of its mass is iron?

1

250 tonnes

2

9 tonnes

3

75 tonnes

4
