Piaget

Piaget views cognitive development as a series of stages that a child progresses through as he or she interacts with their environment.  Each stage is age-based and has specific milestones that children will demonstrate as they interact with their environment. Language also develops and expands as the child’s moves through these stages. Watch the video on the next slide for more information about Piaget's theory.

Lev Vygotsky

Vygotsky, on the other hand, suggests that language and cognitive development are inherently tied to the social interaction that learners have with other individuals in their environment. As the interactions change and become more complex, the learner’s language also becomes more advanced. Watch the video clip on the next slide for more information on Vygotsky's theory.
