NOUNS

Remember, a noun is a person, place, thing or idea. It is usually the subject of a sentence. This is easy to see in simple sentences.

The man is nice. - Which word is the subject (noun?)

Now, what about this sentence?

The nice man is tall. - Subject?

ADJECTIVES are words that describe. In English, there is only ONE way to spell adjectives. In Spanish, there can be up to FOUR ways to spell the same word!! That's because in Spanish, adjectives have to MATCH nouns in GENDER and NUMBER.

GENDER

In Spanish, ALL nouns have gender - not just people! But people is the logical place to start because it makes sense to English speakers. In general, words that end in "O" are masculine and words that end in "A" are feminine. There are some exceptions to this rule, which we will discover along the way.

NUMBER

Just like in English, nouns in Spanish are made plural by adding "S" or "ES." HOWEVER, unlike English, the adjectives that describe those nouns are ALSO made plural!

My friend is artistic. = Mi amigo es  artístico.

My friends are artistic. = Mis amigos son  artísticos.

My friend (a girl) is artistic. = Mi amiga es  artística.

My friends (all girls) are artistic. = Mis amigas son  artísticas.
