Learning & Habit Objective

Learning: I will calculate the surface area of a prism

Habit: I will write organized steps to show my thinking

4

Success Criteria

  • I understand the meaning of surface area

  • I understand the parts of the formula SA=2B+PH

  • I can calculate the surface area of a prism using the formula and organized steps

What do we mean by surface area?

The surface area of a 3-D solid is the sum of the areas of its faces. Think: wrapping paper.

Since we are summing areas, the units for surface area are to the power of 2: m2, in2, cm2,...

The flattened out 3-D solid is called a net and can help us visualize the faces.

Notebook: The Formula SA=2B+PH

SA is surface area, B is area of one base, P is perimeter of one base, and H is height or altitude.

The next slides will guide you through finding the surface area. Write down every step in your notebook.
