The Perfect Tense (passé composé) is a compound tense as it consits of 2 parts:

- the auxiliary : AVOIR or ETRE

- the past participle

In French we use the verb AVOIR most of the time.

example :

j'ai mangé -> I ate / I have eaten

elle a regardé -> she watched / she has watched

nous avons choisi -> we chose / we have chosen

the auxiliary AVOIR (to have)

• j'ai : I have

• tu as : you have (singular)

• il/elle a : he/she has

• nous avons : we have

• vous avez : you have (plural)

• ils/elles ont : they have

How do we build a past participle?

• ER verbs : manger, parler, jouer, regarder

• take away the ER and add an " é " : mangé, joué, regardé

• IR verbs : servir, dormir, choisir

• take away the IR and add an " i " : servi, dormi, choisi

• RE verbs : attendre, entendre, perdre

• take away the RE and add a " u " : attendu, entendu, perdu
