The present progressive

• In both English and Spanish you form the PP with the verb to-be and a present participle (-ing form of a verb)

• In Spanish use estar + present progressive

Present Participles in Spanish

• -ar ending verbs : -ando _{hablar (to speak) > hablando}

• -er and -ir ending verbs: -iendo _{comer (to eat) > comiendo / escribir (to write) > escribiendo}

• when the stem of the verb ends in a vowel, use -yendo _{leer (to read)> leyendo / oir (to hear) - oyendo}

• irregulars: ir (to go) - yendo

Present Participles in Spanish

• stem-changing verbs:

• Preferir (e:i) (to prefer): prefiriendo

• Dormir (o:u) (to sleep): durmiendo
