20

Ice age

An ice age is a geologic period of time during which the temperature of Earth’s surface and atmosphere is reduced drastically. This results in the formation of thick ice sheets and glaciers that expand to cover vast areas of land. This period of time can take millions of years and cause a drastic change in the shape of continents.

media

21

The causes of ice ages are not fully understood. Yet, scientists believe that important factors such as the atmospheric composition, changes in Earth’s orbit around the sun, and position of the continents at that time are all responsible for triggering ice ages.

Glaciers from the ice age cause erosion and deposition, which resulted in unique features such as glacial horns, lakes, U-shaped valleys, and moraines.
