Waste in Health and Social care

  • Health and social care workplaces will produce waste such as syringes, sharps, swabs and bandages.

  • Some of these may be hazardous and harmful to health as they may be infectious, containing microorganism that can cause harm, or be radioactive or toxic.

Clinical waste

  • It includes medical waste such as swabs, dressing, syringes, and any blood, human tissue or other bodily fluids and unwanted medicines.

  • Use disposable gloves and apron to remove used linen from the bed.

  • The linen should be placed in a water-soluble laundry bag which can be placed directly into the washing machine.

  • Bodily fluids, particularly blood and faecal matter, can present a hazard as they carry pathogens.

  • PPE and appropriate buckets and cleaning equipment should be used to avoid transmission of infection.

Sharps

  • Health and social care practitioners will come into contact with sharps when using needles for injections, suturing and removing sutures.

  • Sharps should be disposed of in a sharps box, which is a plastic container with a lid that cannot be opened.

Equipment

  • There is a variety of equipment used within health and social care settings.

  • Some can be disposable such as feeding tube and cannulas. These must be disposed of appropriately, such as in a clinical waste bag.
