Investigation 1:
Weather Measurements
Atmosphere
Air Pressure
Temperature
Cloud Cover
Wind
Humidity
Chance of Precipitation
Sunrise/Sunset
4
5
6
Multiple Select
In what layers of the atmosphere is the temperature INCREASING? (Pick 2)
Troposphere
Stratosphere
Mesosphere
Thermosphere
7
Multiple Select
In what layers of the atmosphere is the temperature DECREASING? (Pick 2)
Troposphere
Stratosphere
Mesosphere
Thermosphere
8
9
Multiple Choice
Meteorologists report the weather forecast every day. What important weather factor is missing from this weather report?
Air Temperature
Cloud Cover
Air Pressure
10
11
Multiple Choice
Which statement best describes the temperature patterns for this city?
There is little to no variation in temperature.
The coldest month is May.
The warmest month is September.
There is significant variation in temperature.
12
13
Investigation 2: Air Pressure and Wind/Air Pressure Maps
Air Pressure moves from High pressure (H) to Low pressure (L)
Wind is caused from differences in the atmospheric pressure
When there is a difference in atmospheric pressure exists, air moves from high pressure to low pressure until the pressures reach EQUALIBRIUM
14
15
16
Multiple Choice
As you drive from California (CA) to Colorado (CO), what happens to the air pressure?
The air pressure is increasing.
The air pressure is decreasing.
The air pressure does not change.
17
18
Multiple Choice
Which of the arrows on the air pressure map below correctly show how the wind would be blowing if we only look at differences in air pressure? (mark the one best answer)
Arrow A
Arrow B
Arrow C
Arrow D
19
Investigation 3: Density of Fluids
Density is the ratio of mass to its volume
If two fluids have equal volumes but differ in mass, the one with the greater mass is denser.
As matter heats up, it expands, causing the matter to become less dense.
20
21
Multiple Choice
Which of the cubes is MORE dense?
Cube 1
Cube 2
22
Investigation 3: Convection in Water/Convection in Air
Convection is the circulation of fluids (liquid or gas) based on temperature.
Example: You are swimming in a pond and notice that in some areas, the water is warm while in others it is cold
HOT fluids rise, COLD fluids sink
23
Multiple Choice
Which of the following is the BEST example of convection?
You get a Sun burn from sitting outside all day.
You swim in a lake and notice that in some spots, it's warm and others it's cold.
You take a sip of hot tea and burn your tongue.
24
25
Investigation 4: Latitude
Latitude describes how far North or South you are from the Equator.
Temperature is the measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles.
The more kinetic energy the particles possess, the more they move and the hotter the material is.
26
27
28
Investigation 4: Latitude/Solar Angle/
The Sun is the major source of energy that heats the atmosphere, and solar energy (light and thermal energy) is transferred by radiation.
The Sun's rays hit Earth at different angles because Earth's surface is curved.
The angle at which light from the Sun strikes the surface of Earth is the Solar Angle.
Places near the Equator receive higher angles of solar energy than places near the North or South Pole.
29
30
31
32
33
Investigation 4: Heating Earth
Season's are caused by Earth's tilted axis as the Earth revolves around the Sun.
Earth is always tilted in the same direction toward Polaris (the North Star).
In our Northern Hemisphere winter, when the North Pole is tilted away from the Sun, sunlight strikes Earth at an indirect angle causing it to spread out across a larger area.
34
35
Multiple Choice
Different locations on Earth heat differently. The climate of a city near the Equator is different than the climate of a city near the North Pole because ____. (mark the one best answer)
There is a higher solar angle at the Equator
There is a lower solar angle at the Equator
The Equator is closer to the Sun
36
Multiple Choice
The diagram below shows Earth in four positions (A, B, C, and D) as it orbits the Sun. Which position of the Earth shows Summer in the Southern Hemisphere?
Point A
Point B
Point C
Point D
37
38
Multiple Choice
Use the data table to determine the relationship between Latitude and climate. Predict which city from the table below will have the warmest climate? (mark the one best answer)
City 1
City 2
City 3
City 4
39
40

42
43
Distance from the Equator (Latitude) & Solar Angle
The equator ( 0° ) receives the most radiant energy from the Sun.
The amount of radiant energy decreases gradually the farther away from the equator in either direction.
The farther from the Equator you go, the lower the average temperature.
44
45
Why does a city that receives 10 hours more of sunlight each day have a colder average temperature?
More important than number of hours of daylight is the angle at which the Sun's rays strike that location on Earth.
Areas that have a high solar angle get more direct sunlight (near the equator), areas with a low solar angle get less (the poles).
Solar angle is directly related to latitude and the shape of Earth.
46
47
Multiple Choice
Which of the following is a cause of uneven heating on Earth's surface?
The Sun is closer to the Earth during Summer.
The Sun's rays hit Earth's surface at different angles.
The Sun is farther from the Earth during Winter.
The Sun's rays hit Earth's surface at the same angle everywhere.
