Repaso de los DOPs

media

2

The purpose of today's lesson is to dust off what you remember about the DOPs or Direct Object Pronouns.

3

Every one was introduced these in Spanish 2, but it's a topic that always needs a refresher.

4

Many of you should have this information on the hoja dorada (golden) o anaranjada. Take a moment and see if you can locate your notes on DOPs from Spanish 2.

5

First, we need to remember how the direct object functions in the sentence.

6

Keep in mind all sentences already have a subject and a verb, so the direct object has to be something that adds to that

7

The job of the direct object is to

receive the action

8

If Raúl opens a gift, then a gift is the direct object

9

We can also simplify the sentence into: Raúl opens it.

(it = a gift)

10

IT in that example is now a

Direct Object Pronoun/DOP

11

Review the DOPs in red on the chart

keep in mind that the text in the gray boxes represents who/what RECEIVES the action

media

12

To know if you need lo, la, los, or las

you need to know if the noun is masc., fem., sing., plural

media

13

Let's go back to our example:

Raúl opens a gift.

Raúl opens it.

14

To get ready to write this in Spanish, we have to think about the word gift:

regalo

15

Then we have to remember that regalo is masculine and singular

el regalo

16

This means we need LO in our

Spanish sentence

17

BUT, we have to think about where that LO will be placed,

because of course we need something else to be different than the English :)

18

The general rule of thumb is:

DOPs go BEFORE the conjugated verb

Raúl it opens

19

So we have:

Raúl abre

as our subject/conjugated verb

and LO as the DOP

20

Multiple Choice

Knowing that the DOP will go before the conjugated verb, which is the correct sentence?

1

Raúl lo abre

2

Lo Raúl abre

3

Raúl abre lo

21

Hopefully you chose:

Raúl lo abre

The DOP is placed before the conjugated verb, abre.

22

Let's try some more

23

Multiple Choice

I buy them

(them = socks = los calcetines)

1

Yo los compro

2

Yo compro los

3

Los yo compro

4

Yo compro los calcetines

24

Yo los compro

was the correct answer showing Subject, DOP, conjugated verb

We can't pick "Yo compro los calcetines" because we need the sentence using the DOP (them)

25

Multiple Choice

We finish it

(it = the homework = la tarea)

1

Nosotros la terminamos

2

La nosotros terminamos

3

Nosotros terminamos la tarea

4

Nosotros terminamos la

26

Nosotros la terminamos

is correct as it shows Subject, DOP, conjugated verb

again, we can't choose "Nosotros terminamos la tarea" because we need the sentence with the DOP (it)

27

Multiple Choice

I see you

(informal you)

1

Yo te veo

2

Yo veo te

3

Te yo veo

4

Tú me ves

28

Yo te veo

is correct

I am performing the action, so we have to have the yo/veo in the sentence. You receive the action so we need the DOP te.

(Tú me ves = You see me)

29

Try the next few.

Remember to think:

What/Who receives the action?

Which DOP will be used?

Where is the conjugated verb?

(so the DOP can go before it)

30

Multiple Choice

They sell it.

(it = their house = casa)

1

Ellos la venden.

2

La ellos venden.

3

Ellos venden su casa.

4

Ellos venden la.

31

Multiple Choice

You(inf) sweep it.

(it = floor = piso)

1

Tú lo barres.

2

Tú te barres.

3

Tú barres el piso.

4

Tú barres lo.

32

Multiple Choice

1

Vosotros nos llamáis.

2

Nos vosotros llamáis.

3

Vosotros llamáis nos.

4

Nosotros os llamamos.

33

Multiple Choice

I have them.

(them = the napkins = servilletas)

1

Yo las tengo.

2

Las yo tengo.

3

Yo tengo las.

4

Yo tengo las servilletas.

34

Multiple Choice

You(pl) bought it.

(it = the car = coche)

(don't stress the past tense, it's just there for some variety)

1

Ustedes lo compraron.

2

La ustedes compraron.

3

Ustedes compraron el coche.

4

Ustedes los compraron.

35

Multiple Choice

She cooked them.

(them = cookies = galletas)

1

Ella las cocinó.

2

Ella cocinó las galletas.

3

Ella cocinó las.

4

Las ella cocinó.

36

Multiple Choice

He sees me.

1

Él me ve.

2

Me él ve.

3

Él ve me.

4

Yo lo veo.

37

One of the things that can get confusing is when there are two people in the sentence.

38

When that happens, you have to think:

Who is performing the action? (subject)

Who is receiving the action? (DOP)

remember the subject also dictates how to conjugate your verb

39

Looking at an example like:

We see her

"We" perform the action

"Her" receives the action

The verb will be conjugated for nosotros

Nosotros la vemos

40

Try a few more with two people in each

41

Multiple Choice

You(inf) call me.

1

Tú me llamas.

2

Tú llamas me.

3

Yo te llamo.

4

Tú te llamas.

42

1

Ella nos llama.

2

Nosotros la llamamos.

3

Ella llama nos.

4

43

1

Ellas te llaman.

2

Tú las llamas.

3

Ellas llaman te.

4

Tú te llamas.

44

Multiple Choice

I call him.

1

Yo lo llamo.

2

Él me llama.

3

Yo llamo lo.

4

Yo llamo él.

45

Let's try a few more with a variation of setups. Again, remember the important questions are:

Who is performing the action (conjugated verb)

Who/What is receiving the action?

46

Multiple Choice

We return them. (the books)

1

Nosotros los devolvemos.

2

Ellos nos devuelven.

2

Tú me dices

3

Yo nos digo

4

50

Multiple Choice

1

Ellos nos conocen

2

Nosotros los conocemos

3

Nos ellos conocen

4

Ellos los conocen

51

Multiple Choice

He remembers me.

1

Él me recuerda.

2

Él lo recuerda.

3

Yo me recuerdo.

4

Yo lo recuerdo.

52

Let's look at a few other things with DOPs

53

Negative sentences

  • Keep the NO

  • The DOP will go after the NO and before the conjugated verb

  • Yo no lo tengo.

  • Él no me llama.

  • Nosotros no las compramos.

54

DOP sentences without a written subject

  • The verb conjugation still tells you who is performing the action

  • DOP still goes before the conjugated verb

  • Lo tengo (tengo = I have, even without the Yo)

  • Te esperamos (esperamos = we wait for, even without the Nosotros)

  • Los compras (compras = you(inf) buy, even without the Tú)

55

Sentences with multiple verbs

  • If you have a double verb expression (1 conjugated followed by an infinitive) the DOP can still go before the conjugated verb, but can also go after and attached to the infinitive.

  • Yo los quiero comprar. (I want to buy them)

  • Yo quiero comprarlos.

  • me vas a llamar. (You are going to call me)

  • Tú vas a llamarme.

56

Sentences with the Present Progressive

  • When you have a DOP in a sentence with the Present Progressive (ESTAR + participle ~ando/~iendo), the DOP can go before the conjugated ESTAR or after and attached to the participle.

  • Ellos me están siguiendo. (They are following me)

  • Ellos están siguiéndome.

  • Ella lo está haciendo. (She is making it)

  • Ella está haciéndolo.

57

Try a few with the double placement options, including some with a lack of subject pronoun and/or negative

58

Multiple Choice

I want to buy them (the plates)

Uses QUERER + infinitive

1

Quiero comprarlos

2

Quiero los comprar

3

Los yo quiero compro

4

Quiero compro los

59

Multiple Choice

I am repeating them (the verbs)

Uses ESTAR + participle

1

60

Multiple Choice

1

Ella nos está pidiendo

2

3

61

Multiple Choice

Uses DEBER + infinitive

1

Yo no debo decirte

2

Yo no te debo digo

3

Tú no me debes decir

4

62

Multiple Choice

She plans to visit us.

Uses PENSAR + infinitive

1

Ella nos piensa visitar

2

Ella piensa nos visitar

3

Yo sé las hacer

4

Sé hago las

65

OK, breathe, the torture is over!

66

I know that was a lot to take in all at once and I promise there will be lots more of review with these, BUT ...

67

DOPs will come up in a lot of the practices you'll be completing.

Not necessarily for you to fill in the blank, but you will need to be able to recognize them

68

When you see

me, te, lo, la, nos, os, los, las

in a sentence, you will need to think carefully about its function

(receiving the action)
