How to form plurals in French

1. Like in English, the general rule of forming plural nouns is to add an "s" to the end.

• e.g. une pomme = an apple

• des pommes = some apples

There are some exceptions to this rule.

2. If a word ends in "s", "z", "x", no further "s" is added.

• e.g. un pois = a pea

• des pois = some peas

3. If a word ends in "al", we change it to "aux".

• e.g. un cheval = a horse

• des chevaux = some horses

4. If a word ends in "ail", we change it to "aux".

• e.g. un travail = a job

• des travaux = some jobs

5. If a word ends in "au", "eau", "eu", we add an "x".

• e.g. un cheveu = a hair

• des cheveux = some hair

6. If a word ends in "ou", we add an "x".

• e.g. un bijou = a jewelry

• des bijoux = some jewelries
