El presente de subjuntivo
The subjunctive is the verbal "mood " we use for stuff that, frankly, "just ain't necessarily so," like hopes and wishes.
Sometimes it's used in simple sentences with expressions like "Ojalá (que)" and "Ni que".
Most of the time, though, it's used in complex sentences in a dependent clause that often begins with or includes "que".
3
La cláusula dependiente
So, what's a dependent clause? Also called a subordinate clause, it's a fragment of a sentence that can't stand on its own such as, "that Bochy likes treats" or "so that Bochy does tricks."
In complex sentences, the subjunctive may be necessary in one of three types of dependent clauses: nominal, adverbial, or adjectival.
4
La cláusula nominal
A nominal clause -una cláusula nominal- is called that because it takes the spot that a noun phrase would take in a simple sentence.
Take, for example, the simple sentence: Bochy quiere un bizcochito. We could replace the noun phrase "un bizcochito" with a dependent clause: Bochy quiere [que Mami le dé un bizcochito].
5
¿"NIDDE"? ¡Ni idea!
When the main clause, la cláusula principal, contains a verb or expression that falls in a certain set of categories that we'll call "NIDDE", then the dependent, in this case nominal, clause is in the subjunctive.
NIDDE stands for: Necesidad, Influencia, Duda, Deseo y Emoción.
6
Some "NIDDE" verbs and expressions you might see in a main clause include:
Necesidad: necesitar, requerir… "es necesario que..." ...
Influencia: aconsejar, recomendar, sugerir, insistir en, permitir, mandar, demandar, pedir, exigir, prohibir… "se prohibe que..." ...
Duda: dudar, negar… "es dudoso que..." ...
Deseo: desear, querer, preferir… "es preferible que..." ...
