What is a cause?
A cause is something people feel strongly about
Some people work for world peace, some people work to protect Earth, or some groups of people work together to work and raise money for research to help cure diseases
People and organizations join together to work for good causes

Mary McLeod Bethune
Mary McLeod has an important cause that she worked hard for: she wanted African American girls a chance to go to school
She wanted to open a school, but she only had $1.50. She did not give up on this important cause
In 1904, Bethune opened her school in Daytona Beach, Florida
Her school was called the Daytona Normal and Industrial Institute
Bethune taught African American girls how to read and write, how to be resourceful, and how to cook, clean, and sew
Bethune wanted her students to be good citizens, so they worked in their community too

People from the community donated money to Bethune's cause
In 1923, a boys school called Cookman Institute joined Bethune's school, and the school later became known as Bethune-Cookman College
Students still attend the school today, which is now known as Bethune-Cookman University

National Youth Administration (NYA)
In 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Bethune to lead the National Youth Administration (NYA)
The National Youth Administration (NYA) helped young people find part-time jobs, and Bethune helped by providing job training

Chavez felt that farmers needed a union so in 1962, Chavez started the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) which Chavez was elected president of
The name was later changed to United Farm Workers

The union's motto was "Viva La Causa" this means "Long live the cause"
In 1965, Chavez led the union's first strike. He also started a boycott. He wanted everyone to boycott, or stop buying grapes and he wanted stores to stop selling grapes
The union's strike went on for many years until finally the farm owners agreed to raise the farmworkers pay
The conflict was resolved peacefully
