What is a cause?

  • A cause is something people feel strongly about

  • Some people work for world peace, some people work to protect Earth, or some groups of people work together to work and raise money for research to help cure diseases

  • People and organizations join together to work for good causes

Mary McLeod Bethune

  • Mary McLeod has an important cause that she worked hard for: she wanted African American girls a chance to go to school

  • She wanted to open a school, but she only had $1.50. She did not give up on this important cause

  • In 1904, Bethune opened her school in Daytona Beach, Florida

  • Her school was called the Daytona Normal and Industrial Institute

  • Bethune taught African American girls how to read and write, how to be resourceful, and how to cook, clean, and sew

  • Bethune wanted her students to be good citizens, so they worked in their community too

  • People from the community donated money to Bethune's cause

  • In 1923, a boys school called Cookman Institute joined Bethune's school, and the school later became known as Bethune-Cookman College

  • The union's motto was "Viva La Causa" this means "Long live the cause"

  • In 1965, Chavez led the union's first strike. He also started a boycott. He wanted everyone to boycott, or stop buying grapes and he wanted stores to stop selling grapes

  • The union's strike went on for many years until finally the farm owners agreed to raise the farmworkers pay

  • The conflict was resolved peacefully
