Energy Systems

How do we make the energy we need to live and exercise?

Slide image

2

What is the ENERGY our body needs?

To work all of our bodies cells we need energy in the form of ATP.

Our body makes ATP in different ways depending on how much and how fast the energy is needed.

Slide image

3

There are 3 energy systems:

  • Phosphagen System or ATP-PC system

  • Lactic Acid System or Glycolysis

  • Aerobic or Oxidative System

Slide image

4

Energy Continuum

The 3 energy systems work together to provide the ATP needed to do the activity.

Slide image

5

We need to understand this graph and how and when each system is used.........

Slide image

6

ATP storage....

We have some ATP ready to go stored in our muscles

This is part of our 'flight or fight' response and allows us to run away from immediate danger or fight it!

It does not last long but allows our ATP-PC system to start working.

Multiple Choice

Question image

Approximately how long does it take for the storage of ATP in our muscles to be exhausted?

1

It is never exhausted we store enough to continue exercising all the time

2

It only lasts up to 5 seconds

3

It will last about 20 seconds

4

It will be exhausted in approximately 2 seconds

8

ATP-PC Phosphogen System

Part of our ANEAROBIC SYTEM

and does not need oxygen to make ATP

Makes a lot of ATP very Quickly

Only lasts up to 10 seconds

Phospho-creatine is the fuel for the system and is stored in the muscle cells

Supplies ATP and allows our Lactic Acid System to start working.

Multiple Choice

Question image

What is the fuel for the ATP-PC system and approximately how long will it last?

1

Phosphocreatine is the fuel for the ATP-PC system and it will last approximately 5 minutes

2

The ATP-PC system will last approximately 2 minutes and ATP is the fuel

3

The ATP-PC system uses Phosphocreatine as fuel and will last approximately 10 minutes

4

Phosphocreatine is the fuel for the ATP-PC system and it will last approximately 10 seconds

10

Multiple Choice

The ATP-PC System makes lots of ATP very quickly. Which activity would this energy system be the main system supplying ATP?

1

Marathon Race

2

Javelin Throw

3

Football Match

4

200m Swim

11

Lactic Acid System

Part of our ANEAROBIC SYTEM

and does not need oxygen to make ATP

Makes a lot of ATP very Quickly

Only last between 1-3 minutes (depends on training/fitness)

Glucose is the fuel for the system and is stored in the muscle cells as glycogen or transported to the muscles in the blood.

Supplies ATP and allows our Aerobic system to start working.

Slide image

12

Multiple Choice

What is the fuel for the lactic acid energy system?

1

Glucose

2

Glycogen

3

Sugar

4

Carbohydrate

5

All of the these

13

Multiple Choice

Question image

Approximately how long will the lactic acid system last?

1

approximately 1-3 minutes depending on training and fitness

2

approximately 3-5 minutes depending on training and fitness

3

between 10 and 30 seconds

4

It will last as long as we need lots of energy

14

Multiple Choice

What limits the use of this system?

1

It runs out of fuel

2

it is taken over by the aerobic system so stops working

3

it makes lactic acid which stops muscles functioning

4

there are no limits

15

Aerobic System

This is out AEROBIC ENERGY SYTEM

and needs oxygen to make ATP

Makes a lot of ATP and works over a long period of time

The system is slow and can not keep up with high demands for ATP

Glucose is the fuel for the system and is stored in the muscle cells as glycogen or transported to the muscles in the blood.

The system can also use fats and protein as fuel.

Type answer...

17

Multiple Choice

Question image

How long will the energy system supply energy for?

1

The energy system will supply energy until the fuel runs out as long as oxygen is present

2

It will last up to 3-4 hours

3

It will make all of the energy for every type of exercise and last for the duration of any exercise period

4

It will last just over 2 minutes

18

Energy Continuum

All energy systems work on a continuum, swapping and changing depending on the DEMAND for ATP and the DURATION of the activity.

Slide image

19

You need to be able to suggest the main energy system for different sporting activities.....
