2
Minerals
Minerals are not man made and are inorganic. This means they do not contain plants and animals.
Minerals have properties that help you identify them.
Some properties are: hardness, streak, luster, cleavage, flexibility, color (least important)
3
Multiple Choice
A mineral is an inorganic substance and is found in the earth. A mineral is not man made.
True
False
4
Luster
Glassy, Shinny, Metallic- These words mean it has a luster
Dull, non-metallic, -These words mean it doesn't have a luster.
5
Multiple Choice
If you are looking at a chart and it says the mineral you are looking at is non-metallic. Does your mineral have a luster?
yes
no
6
Cleavage
When a mineral breaks into smooth pieces or flat surfaces
This can be tested by simply breaking the mineral.
7
Hardness
The Moh's hardness scale helps you determine the hardness of the mineral.
It goes from 1 to 10. 1 is the softest and 10 is the hardest (diamond)
You can test hardness by using a penny or your fingernail.
8
Multiple Choice
Calcite has the hardness of 3 and feldspar has a hardness of 6. Which statement is true?
Calcite can scratch feldspar.
Feldspar can scratch calcite.
9
Streak
A streak is a minerals powder that it leaves when rubbed on a porcelain plate.
The minerals streak is not always the same as its outside color.
The softer the mineral, the better streak it will leave. If the mineral is harder, you need to push down much more to see the streak.
10
Multiple Choice
Mohs Hardness Scale:
Talc -2
Quartz-7
Diamond-10
Which mineral will be able to make an easier streak?
Diamond
Quartz
Talc
11
Rocks
Rocks are pieces of minerals, other rocks, fossils, seashells, plants and animals that are formed 3 different ways.
There are 3 different types of rocks: igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary.
Rocks are formed by the rock cycle.
12
Multiple Choice
Weathering is when all 3 types of rocks are....
compacted and cemented together
broken down by wind, water and other elements
deposited into the water
melted
13
Multiple Choice
A metamorphic rock:
is formed by cooled magma
is formed by cementation and compaction
is formed by heat and pressure
14
Multiple Choice
An igneous rock is
is formed by the cooling of magma
is formed by cementation and compaction of sediment
if formed by heat and pressure
15
Multiple Choice
A sedimentary rock is formed by
the cooling of magma
the cementation and compaction of sediment
heat and pressure
