Energy Review
What is Energy, Types of Energy, and Energy Transformations

2
What is Energy?
Energy is the ability to do work.
Work is done when a force causes an object to move.
3
Types of Energy
There are several types of energy. The 2 main categories of energy are Potential and Kinetic.
Potential Energy is stored energy.
Kinetic Energy is energy of motion.
4
Other Energy Types
Sound- energy produced by vibrating sound waves
Mechanical - energy caused by objects moving
Chemical- energy stored in the bonds of atoms and molecules
Radiant- light or electromagnetic energy that travels in the form of waves
Electrical- energy from the movement of electrons
Gravitational- energy stored in an object because of where it is placed
5
Other Energy Types
Thermal- caused by the movement of atoms and molecules. Heat energy
Nuclear Energy- energy holding together the nucleus of an atom.
Chemical- stored in the bonds of atoms and molecules. Energy is released when the bonds are broken.
Elastic- found in objects that bounce back to their regular shape when stretched or squished.
6
Law of Conservation of Energy
Energy can neither be created or destroyed it can only change its form.
7
Energy Transformations
Energy can change from one form to another.
For example, a hair dryer changes electrical energy into heat and sound energy.
8
