WEEK #7 / ACTIVITY #1 (Tectonics)
We will review the basics of the mainstream scientific theory of Plate Tectonics.
2
The layers of the Earth's interior
In simple terms, there are 4 layers inside of the Earth.
1) CRUST; SOLID outer "shell" of the Earth
2) MANTLE; PARTIALLY-MELTED layer
3) OUTER CORE; LIQUID metal layer
4) INNER CORE; SOLID metal layer
3
Multiple Select
Check all that apply.
What are the 4 basic layers of the Earth?
inner core
biosphere
outer core
crust
mantle
4
Tectonic Plates
-Earth's crust is broken up into "Tectonic Plates"
-Tectonic Plates move very slowly
-Tectonic plates;
1) Crash or CONVERGE
2) Separate or DIVERGE
3) Slide past or TRANSFORM
5
Multiple Choice
Mark the statement that is TRUE.
Tectonic plates can converge, diverge or transform
Tectonic plates can converse, divide or transmission
6
Movement of Tectonic Plates
-The Earth's crust (Tectonic Plates) converge, diverge or transform as a result of CONVECTION CELLS in the MANTLE.
7
Multiple Select
Choose the answer that has the missing term.
-The Earth's crust (Tectonic Plates) converge, diverge or transform as a result of ????????? ?????? in the MANTLE.
soft cells
convection cells
conduction cells
terrorist cells
8
What "DRIVES" the movement of Tectonic Plates?
-Convection cells in the MANTLE are a result of HEAT transfer.
-The Earth's INNER CORE is the source of HEAT.
-HEAT escapes from the INNER CORE and travels away from it.
The HEAT from the INNER CORE transfers into the MANTLE and causes circular MOVEMENT.
-
These circular MOVEMENTs are called "CONVECTION CURRENTS"
9
Multiple Choice
Where is the heat source that ultimately drives convection currents in the mantle?
crust
outer core
mantle
inner core
10
Convergent Tectonic Boundary
-When Tectonic Plates collide, crash or come together, CONVERGENT plate boundaries are formed.
-To "converge" means to "meet together"
11
Multiple Choice
Choose the answer that has the missing term.
-When Tectonic Plates collide, crash or come together, ????????? plate boundaries are formed.
transform
divergent
convergent
12
Convergent Boundary Features
-Very large & very explosive stratovolcanoes
-Very deadly & dangerous PYROCLASTIC flows can occur at stratovolcanoes.
-Mt. St. Helens is a stratovolcano that erupted in 1980.
-Very powerful earthquakes
-Tsunamis
-Very tall mountains (Mt. Everest)
-Thermal activity (hot springs)
13
Multiple Choice
Mt. Saint Helens erupted in 1980.
Mt. Saint Helens is classified or categorized as a ?
shield volcano
stratovolcano
lahar
cinder cone
14
Divergent Tectonic Boundaries
-When Tectonic Plates pull apart, separate or move away from each other DIVERGENT plate boundaries are formed.
-Diverge means to move away, separate or extend
in another direction
15
Multiple Choice
Choose the answer that includes the missing term.
--When Tectonic Plates pull apart, separate or move away from each other ???????? plate boundaries are formed.
convergent
transform
divergent
16
Divergent Boundary Features
-Volcanic activity occurs at DIVERGENT boundaries. However, the volcanic activity is not very powerful, though an immense amount of material can be erupted.
-Rift valleys
-Weak earthquakes
-Thermal activity (hot springs)
17
Multiple Select
Choose TWO factual statements regarding tectonic features of DIVERGENT boundaries?
Strong earthquakes
Weak earthquakes.
Powerful Volcanoes
Rift Valleys
18
Transform Tectonic Boundary
-When Tectonic Plates slide past each other, a TRANSFORM plate boundary is formed.
19
Multiple Choice
Choose the answer that has the missing term.
-When Tectonic Plates slide past each other, a ?????? plate boundary is formed.
convergent
divergent
transform
20
Transform Boundary Features
-Very large EARTHQUAKES
-The San Andreas Fault is a local Transform Tectonic Boundary
-Thermal activity (hot springs)
21
Multiple Choice
True or False?
We live very close to the San Andreas Fault?
If we drive to Bakersfield from Ventura County, we will drive over the San Andreas Fault?
True
False
True-False
There is no such thing as truth.
There is no such thing as false...DON'T JUDGE!!!
