What is irony?

  • VERBAL IRONY When what is said by the character is not what he or she originally meant

Elements of Fiction

  • Character: the one you relate with, converse with or listen to the thoughts of.

  • This character and the way he or she changes in the story progresses become thr driving force of fiction-the reason that you as a reader will be interested or disinterested as you read.

  • Symbolism-a short story may use a character, object, or event to signify something else from the original meaning.

Who Is F. Sionil Jose?

  • At 95 years old, F. Sionil Jose has lived through 15 Philippine presidents including Manuel Quezon.

  • Sionil Jose is one of the most celebrated authors in the Philippines. He is best known for his novels and short stories that depict class struggles in Filipino society. 

  • After World War II, he dropped out of the University of Santo Tomas to pursue his writing career.

  • 1947-staff member at the publication Commonweal

  • 1948- worked as assistant editor of the U.S. Information Agency

  • 1957-he became the associate editor of the Manila Times Sunday Magazin

About the Author:F. Sionil Jose

  • Francisco Sionil José’s novels, short stories and non-fiction works highlight the social underpinnings, class struggles and colonial history of Filipino society.

  • In 1949, José has written more than 35 books, translated into more than 20 languages and published worldwide.

  • Jose is a recipient of several Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature for his works: The God Stealer (1959), Arbol de Fuego (1980), Mass (1981), and A Scenario for Philipppine Rannaissance (1979).

  • Depending on the outcome of the story, the character may either triumph or fail, and seeing how the character reacts to these changes also sets the tone for the climax, until the short story is concluded.
