What is a natural hazard? Can you give any examples? Why do people need to be warned about them?

14

Natural hazard definition

Natural hazards are extreme natural events that can cause loss of life, extreme damage to property and disrupt human activities.

Some natural hazards, such as flooding, can happen anywhere in the world. Other natural hazards, such as tornadoes, can only happen in specific areas. Some hazards need specific climatic or tectonic conditions to occur

15

What are the two types of natural hazards?

-Atmospheric (to do with the weather)

-Geological (to do with the

18

Are all extreme natural events hazards?

  • Question: If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

19

Poll

Opinion: If nobody is affected by an extreme natural event, should we class it as a natural hazard?

Yes

No

Not sure

20

What makes some people more at risk from natural hazards than others? Things to consider:

  • Population - did the hazard occur near to a sparsely populated village or a densely populated city?

  • Relief - are people working on flat farmland prone to flooding, or living on steep slopes prone to landslides?

  • Wealth - can people afford to protect themselves and their homes?

  • Technology - are buildings and infrastructure well made to resist hazards?

21

Poll

Which do you think is most important in increasing your risk of being effected by a natural hazard?

Whether you live in a village or a city

Whether you live near to steep slopes or areas prone to flooding

Whether your country is a HIC (high income country) or LIC (low income country

Whether you are a rich or poor person

Fill in the Blank

The _______ scale measures the strength/intensity of an earthquake

30

Fill in the Blank

The _______ scale measures the damage/destruction caused by an earthquake

31

Multiple Choice

What does PPP stand for?

1

Prediction, planning, precaution

2

Planning, prediction, monitoring

3

32

Multiple Choice

What is a primary effect?

1

Something that happens right away during the event

2

Something that happens some time later

33

Multiple Select

Which of the following are primary effects of an earthquake? (3)

1

Homes destroyed

2

People killed and injured

3

Spread of disease

4

Roads and power lines damaged

5

Shops are looted

34

Social, environmental and economic

Effects can also be grouped into:

-Social (impacts people's lives)

-Environmental (impacts plants and animals and their habitats

-Economic (impacts jobs, wealth and businesses)

35

Multiple Choice

Which of the following is a social effect of a hurricane?

1

Homes destroyed

2

High building costs

3

Trees uprooted

36

Multiple Choice

Which of the following is an economic effect of a hurricane?

1

People injured

2

High rebuilding cost

3

Habitats destroyed

37

Living on plate boundaries: volcanoes

Describing volcanoes and understanding the effect they have on people and the environment

Slide image

38

Slide image

This is a map of all of the recent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions - Is there a pattern?

39

Volcanoes at constructive plate boundaries

  • Two plates are moving apart creating a gap

  • Magma flows out of the mantle and fills the gap

  • This cools and forms a ridge between the plates

Slide image

40

Volcanoes at destructive plate boundaries

  • Two plates move together and one is destroyed.

  • The 'friction' can cause earthquakes

  • The 'subducted' plate will melt in the mantle

  • The magma will rise through the cracks in the earths crust to form a cone shaped volcano

Slide image

41

Multiple Choice

Which tectonic plate is 'subducted' at a destructive plate boundary?

1

Oceanic

2

Continental
