2

Liquids

  • Liquids can also be described by the kinetic molecular theory.

  • They have constantly moving particles that slide past one another

  • This explains why gases and liquids are both fluids

3

Multiple Choice

Do you think a gas or a liquid has more attractive forces between particles?

1

Liquid

2

Gas

4

Open Ended

Most liquids flow downhill. Quickly reasearch and answer with a liquid that flows uphill.

5

Liquids

  • Intermolecular forces like dipole-dipole london dispersion, and hydrogen bonding account for the properties of a liquid.

  • These are why some liquids are denser than others.

6

Open Ended

Most fluids are less dense as liquids than solids. What are some liquids that are more dense than their solid counterparts? Quickly research and answer. ( something other than water)

7

Open Ended

Why does a gas have more ability to compress?

8

Liquids

  • Liquids can be compressed by about 4% of there volume when under 1000 atm of pressure, similar to a solid

  • Gases under the same pressure can compress to about 1/1000th their size

  • Like gases, liquids can diffuse (mix particles). Diffusion occurs becuase of random motion of particles.

9

Multiple Choice

Does diffusion happen faster at higher or lower temperatures?

1

higher

2

lower

10

Properties of Liquids

  • Surface tension- a force that tends to pull adjacent parts of a liquid's surface together, thereby decreasing surface area to the smallest possible size.

  • Capillary action- attraction of the surface of a liquid to the surface of a sold

11

Open Ended

What is the liquid the lowest surface tension and why does it have the lowest surface tension?

12

Changes of state

  • Vaporization- proces by which a liquid or solid changes to a gas

  • Evaporation- process by which particles excape form the surface of a nonboiling liquid

  • Boiliing

  • Freezing- physical change of a liquid to a solid

13

Open Ended

What happens to the energy in a liquid to change into a solid?
