2

Aims of the lesson

  • I will explain the purpose of a set of stairs

  • I will explain the regulations behind stairs

3

Lesson Objectives

  • You will define the purpose of a staircase

  • You will be able to identify the required calclations required by law when constructing a staircase

4

Make sure you have a pen and paper ready plus the handout which has been emailed to you to fill in.

Stair cases have a lot of required regulations so please write these down for future reference

5

What are the main purpose for a set of stairs?

  • To enable you to travel safely from one floor to another

  • To enable you to escape in case of a fire or emergency

6

Which part of building regulations cover staircases?

  • Part K

7

Can you name any parts of a staircase?

  • Tread

  • Riser

  • Step

  • Banister

  • Balustrade

  • Apron lining

  • Spandrel framing

Fill in the Blank

Part ? Cover the building regulations on staircases

10

The tread

  • This is the part of the step we put our feet on.

  • The minimum length of a step should be how many millimetres?

  • 220mm

  • This is known as an individual going

11

The Riser

  • This is the vertical part of a staircase in between the treads

  • What is the maximum height of a riser?

  • Again 220mm but this is maximum where a tread is minimum

  • There can be a maximum of 16 treads on a straight flight of stairs any more and we would need a resting place. What would we call this resting place?

  • A landing

12

A Step

  • Can you define a step?

  • This is a combined tread and riser

13

The pitch

  • What do we mean by the pitch

  • The angle of the stairs what is the maximum pitch in degrees?

  • 42 degrees on a domestic staircase

14

A simple formula to determine if stairs are under the correct pitch

  • 2 x rise plus one going = between 550mm and 700mm

  • To simplify this we add the dimensions of 2 risers and the depth of one tread if it comes inbetween these dimensions the stairs comply to part k of the building regs as they are under 42 degrees

More regs!

  • When you walk up a staircase there is a handrail which is joined to the string with spindles

  • The required height of this handrail when climbing the stairs would be between?

  • 840mm and 1000mm (1 Metre)

  • This changes when the handrail is on a landing where it can be no less than 900mm high

  • The maximum distance between these spindles is 99mm WHY???

23

Head height

  • You must have a minimum of 2 metres of headroom when fitting a staircase

24

These slides cover the main stair regulations. Did we meet our objectives??

You will now be assigned two pieces of home work on the quizizz format i will send out codes at the end of the lesson.

25

Next lesson

Our next lessons will involve the correct procedures when measuring and fitting a staircase.

Followed by the complex practice of setting out and assembling staircases, we will combine this theory with practical sessions where you can put your new found knowledge into practice.
