The Ascension

Imagine the great joy the Apostles felt, knowing that their friend and teacher, their Lord and Saviour, had risen from the dead. For the next 40 days, Jesus continued to appear to them and teach them about the kingdom of God. He also told them to wait in Jerusalem for what God had promised: “‘…you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit…’” (Acts 1:5).

The Apostles wondered if Jesus would stay on Earth, free His people from their Roman rulers, and become their leader. But Jesus knew that His Father’s plan was much bigger. He told the Apostles, “‘…you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth…’” (Acts 1:8). Then Jesus ascended into Heaven to be with God the Father.

We profess our beliefs about the Ascension and the second coming of Jesus each time we say:

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory

to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end…

and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come.

Ascension is a connection between Earth and Heaven

By the power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus was conceived in Mary’s womb. Through that same Spirit, Jesus ascended into Heaven to be with the Father. It might seem like the Ascension ended the presence of Jesus on Earth among His people. But it was actually the beginning of a new relationship. Jesus would now be with us through the Church. The coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost marked the birth of the Church. Jesus remains with us through the Word, the priesthood, the people of God gathered at church, and the sacraments. He is most perfectly present in the Eucharist.

Jesus’ ascension is a connection between Earth and Heaven. It is a bridge between our earthly lives and eternal life in Heaven. We live in hope that by living a holy life, we will be united with God in Heaven one day.
