Spelling: Vowel Rules

There are many rules that will help you say and spell words. Here are some rules to help you with vowels (a, e, i, o, u, y).

6

"Silent e" Rule

Silent e is bossy. It does not make a sound. Instead, it makes the vowel that comes before say its own name.

examples: rope, gate, prize

7

Multiple Choice

Why is the "slient e" considered "bossy?"

1

It makes other letters do its bidding

2

It makes other letters say their own name.

3

It makes the other letters say its name

4

It's not actually bossy, it's just a rumor

8

"i before e except after c" Rule

Write i before e except after c or except when it sounds like an a as in "neighbor" and "weigh."

9

Multiple Choice

What is the exception to the "i before e" rule?

1

Don't put "i before e" if the vowels sound like the letter "a," like in "neighbor"

2

The letter "i" always goes before the letter "e"

3

Rules were meant to be broken

10

Examples

i before e:

relief, believe, niece, chief, field

e before i:

receive, ceiling, eight

Words that break the rule:

weird, height, science

11

"Drop the -y and add -ies or -s" Rule

If a word ends in -y with a consonant before it (sky), drop the -y and add -ies to make it plural (skies). If the -y has a vowel before it (toy), then just add -s (toys).

12

Examples

Vowel, then "y"

buy/buys

boy/boys

day/days

Consonant, then "y"

baby/babies

family/families

pony/ponies

13

Multiple Choice

If a word ends in the letter "y" and the letter right before the "y" is a vowel, like "way" or "buy," how do you make it plural?

1

Add "-ies" to the end

2

Add "-s" to the end

3

The plurarl form is the same as the singular

14
