Body Systems and Interaction!

2
Seven Body Systems
Cells add up to make tissues, which then form organs, which work together in body systems!
We've learned the skeletal, muscular, nervous, digestive, respiratory, circulatory, and excretory systems.
Each system is important, but they also interact, or work together!
3
The Skeletal System
The skeletal system actually has THREE functions.
One, protection! Like how your skull protects your brain, and your ribs protect your heart.
Two, support! Like how your femurs (thigh bones) hold up your weight.
Three, movement, where different bones meet!
4
The Muscular System
The muscular system lets your body move, in two ways.
You control voluntary muscles, which pull on your bones to move the body.
Other muscles you don't control. They are always on to keep your organs working, like the heart and stomach.
5
Skeletal + Muscular Interact!
Remember, to interact means to work together!
Your skeletal and muscular systems interact to move the body!
You control some muscles, which contract, or shorten, to pull on your bones. Then you move!
6
Multiple Choice
Which of these is NOT a function of the skeletal system?
It protects the body's organs and insides.
It provides the body with support to stand tall.
It helps you fight off different diseases.
It lets you move where your bones meet.
7
Multiple Select
Which TWO of these things does your muscular system do? Pick TWO.
Breaks down the food you eat into nutrients.
Pulls on your bones to move the body.
Brings oxygen gas into the body.
Lets your organs move, like the heart and brain.
8
Multiple Choice
Which of these things do your skeletal and muscular systems do TOGETHER?
Pump blood through your veins.
Protect your brain from injury with the skull.
Raise your hand when muscles pull on bones.
Absorb nutrients from food into the blood.
9
The Nervous System
First, the nervous system collects information.
Eye nerves, ear nerves, nerves in your hands - they all collect info!
Second, the brain sends a message to control how the body will respond!
10
Skeletal, Muscular, Nervous Interact!
Pretend you want to kick a ball.
First, eye nerves see the ball, and your brain sends a message to kick it.
Second, the nerves turn on your leg muscles.
Last, the leg muscles pull up your leg bones, and you kick the ball!
11
Multiple Choice
Which of these is the function of the nervous system?
It protects the body and your insides from injury.
It receives info from the world around you, and controls how you respond.
It breaks down your food and absorbs the nutrients.
It removes wastes from the body as a liquid called urine.
12
Multiple Select
You see your friend hold up her hand. You raise your hand to give them a high five! How many body systems did that take? Select 1 or more answers.
Excretory System
Muscular System
Nervous System
Skeletal System
13
Skeletal, Muscular, Nervous Interact!
Was that last one tricky?
First, your eye nerves see the hand up.
Then, your brain sends a message to raise your hand.
Arm nerves turn on arm muscles.
Finally, the arm muscles lift up your hand!
14
The Digestive System
The digestive system breaks down your food into small pieces.
This happens in the mouth, esophagus, and stomach.
Then the digestive system absorbs nutrients into the body!
This in the small intestines.
You need nutrients for energy, and so your body stays healthy.
15
The Respiratory System
The respiratory system brings oxygen gas into the body, and gets rid of carbon dioxide gas.
This is breathing!
The main organ of the respiratory system is the lungs.
Without oxygen, the mitochondria in your body's cells cannot turn food into energy.
16
Multiple Select
What is the function of the digestive system? Pick TWO (2) answers.
Breaks down the food you eat into smaller pieces.
Brings oxygen gas into the body, so your cells can make energy.
Removes carbon dioxide gas from the body.
Absorbs the nutrients from food into the body.
17
Multiple Select
What is the function of the respiratory system? Pick TWO (2) answers.
Lets your body move, and lets your organs move, like the stomach.
Brings oxygen gas into the body, so your cells can make energy.
Removes carbon dioxide gas from the body.
Sends messages from the brain to the body so you can react.
18
The Circulatory System
The circulatory system uses the heart to pump blood through the body.
Blood travels through blood vessels, like veins and arteries.
Blood is the body's delivery system! It carries important materials to cells, like oxygen and nutrients.
Blood also carries away waste.
19
Digestive, Respiratory, Circulatory Interact!
You cannot live without energy.
You make energy in your cells, using your mitochondria.
But your cells and mitochondria cannot produce energy without all three systems - digestive, respiratory, and circulatory!
20
Making Energy
Your respiratory system brings oxygen into your lungs, where it is absorbed into the blood.
Your digestive system breaks down food into nutrients, and absorbs them into your blood.
Your blood (that's the circulatory system) carries the nutrients and oxygen to all of your cells.
Finally, the mitochondria in your cells turn the nutrients and oxygen into energy!
21
Multiple Choice
Which of these is the function of the circulatory system?
It breaks down the food you eat into nutrients and energy.
It brings oxygen gas into the body.
It pumps blood around the body through blood vessels.
It protects your body and insides from injury.
22
Multiple Choice
WHY does your circulatory system pump blood around the body?
Because blood is what protects all of your body's cells from injury.
Because blood carries important materials for cells, like nutrients and oxygen.
Because blood sends messages from your brain to your nerves.
Because blood has to be removed from the body every 24 hours.
23
Multiple Select
How many of these systems do you need to produce energy? Pick more than one.
Circulatory System
Digestive System
Excretory System
Respiratory System
24
Multiple Select
How many of the options below happens when your body produces energy? Pick more than one.
Your respiratory system brings oxygen into the body.
Your digestive system breaks down food into nutrients.
Your blood absorbs nutrients and oxygen to carry to cells.
Your mitochondria in your cells turns nutrients and oxygen into energy.
25
The Excretory System
As you live, your body makes waste you need to get rid of.
The excretory system takes wastes from the blood, and then removes them from the body in a liquid waste called urine.
The main organ that pulls wastes from the blood are your kidneys.
The urine is stored in the bladder.
26
Circulatory + Excretory Interaction
Your circulatory system delivers important materials to cells, but it also carries AWAY a cell's waste.
The circulatory system carries cellular waste to the kidneys.
The kidneys then pull the waste out of the blood to make urine!
27
Multiple Choice
Which of these is the function of the excretory system?
It provides the body with support to stand tall.
It breaks down the food you eat into nutrients.
It carries nutrients and oxygen through blood to your cells.
It removes waste from the blood, then removes urine from the body.
28
Multiple Select
How many systems do you need to remove waste from blood, and then urine from the body? Pick TWO (2).
Circulatory System
Digestive System
Excretory System
Skeletal System
29
The End!
Move on and check your score!
If you don't like the score, you can play again.
Your final quiz of the year, on body systems and their interaction, is Thursday.
