Preterit Tense

It expresses an action or actions completed in the past. In English, it is ussually translated as the simple past ( I sang).

It is used in the following scenarios:

-Actions completed in the past

- A series of completed actions in the past

-Conditions no longer in effect

How to form the Preterit Tense

• Verbs are considered regular if there is no change to the stem. Some -ir verbs have a stem change in the third person, but it isn't considered to be irregular

• Most verbs are regular, there are only 17 irregular verbs in the preterit.

• Irregular conjugations: saber, andar, caber, conducir, dar,decir,estar, hacer,ir,poder,poner,querer,ser,tener,traer,ver,venir

Regular -ar verbs

• Yo .....-é

• Tu.....-aste

• El/Ella/Usted.....-ó

• Nosotros.....-amos

• Ellos/Elllas/Ustedes.....-aron

• All -ar verbs except: andar,dar,estar.In -ar verbs,form of nosotros is identical to the present. It becomes clear if it is present or past by context.

• Conjugate: ayudar,cantar,pensar,trabajar,recordar,viajar

To express a series of completed actions in the past

• Anoche en la fiesta bailamos, cantamos y hablamos

To express a condition that is no longer in effect
