Globally, 795 million people remain undernourished, a figure that is expected to increase by an additional 2 billion by the year 2050. Worldwide, the vast majority of people suffering from hunger live in developing countries, where 12.9 % of the population is undernourished.

US$1 billion is spent each year on vaccines which can save up to 1 million children per year. Since 1990, thanks to vaccines, 17,000 fewer children have died every day, but more than 6 million children are still dying before their fifth birthday each year.

Education is the process of facilitating learning or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs and habits. Quality education specifically entails issues such as appropriate skills development, gender parity, provision of relevant school infrastructure, equipment, educational materials and resources, scholarships or teaching force.
26
Enrolment in primary education in developing countries has reached 91%, but 57 million children still remain out of school. More than half of children who are not enrolled in school live in sub-Saharan Africa. An estimated 50% of out-of-school children of primary school age live in conflict-affected areas. 103 million youth worldwide are still illiterate, and more than 60% of them are women.
27
Look at the picture and answer the following questions:
What does the data show about education access in their own country and continent?
How does this compare with other countries and continents in the world?
Do you think that there is fair access to education across the world?
28
Gender Equality is a principle that states that all men and women need to be treated equally and to have the same rights despite their biological differences. These should not prevent them from having the same opportunities to succeed in school and in life.
29
About 2/3 of countries in the developing regions have achieved gender parity in primary education. In Southern Asia, only 74 girls were enrolled in primary school for every 100 boys in 1990. By contrast, in the world of work women in Northern Africa hold less than 1 in 5 paid jobs in the non-agricultural sector. And in only 46 countries women hold more than 30% of seats in at least 1 chamber of their national parliament.
