There are many sources of information that tell us about delhi sultanate.Inscriptions,paintings,coins and architecture provide some information while literary or written sources called tawarikh written in persian tell us about the events and other important happenings of a time.

tawarikhs were written by learned men such as scholars , adminstrators , and poets of the court who were in direct contact with the sultan. they mainly wrote about events that were important to the rewards. they avoided writing about any thing that could upset the sultan. thus the information given in tawarikhs is not always dependable as most of these men were rich and lived in cities they had no idea about the lives of the common people in villages

this is why it is important to examine different sources to get correct information.

there were many travellers who came to india during the period of delhi sultanate. they left written accounts of how people lived during that time . A few of them served in the sultans court. for ex :- Ibn batuta was a moroccan traveller who served under Muhammad bin tughlaq and wrote about the society during his rule
