Cognates
There are many words you can accurately guess the meaning of because they look similar to words you already know in English. These are called Cognates. I'll bet you can figure out what these French words mean:

professeur
docteur

There are even a few simple rules you can use to create French cognates based on your knowledge of English.
Words that end in -tion in English, almost always end in -tion in French

I'm sure by now you're starting to get the hang of these Cognates, but there are some tricky ones! They are called False Cognates. False Cognates are words that LOOK or SOUND like English, but are tricky ... they don't mean what they seem to!
