​Our Targets

• ​We will analyze how authors create characters using their speech, thoughts, actions, effects of others, and looks (STEAL).

Open Ended

In a complete sentence, describe a friend or family member using one of the elements of indirect characterization. (EX: Kerri walked in, Dr. Pepper jug in hand and a smile on her face, ready to start her shift.)

Direct Characterization

When the author tells you exactly what they want you to know.

(EX: Carl was elated because he found a herd of llamas in his back yard this morning.)​

​Indirect Characterization

• ​Authors mostly create their characters by giving us hints about who they are rather than telling us clearly using these tools:

• ​Speech

• ​Thoughts

• ​Effect on Others

• ​Actions

• ​Looks
