5

Mixed number is a combination of a whole number and a fraction

media

6

Action:

Show examples of mixed fraction from anything in your house.

7

First step in adding or subtracting mixed numbers, we have to convert mixed numbers into improper fraction.

Look at your content book on page 17

After converting mixed numbers into improper fractions, check if they are similar or dissimilar.

If dissimilar, we have to transform them into similar fraction by getting the LCM.

If they are similar, proceed with addition or subtraction.

Then, express the result in simplest/ lowest term.

To add or subtract mixed numbers

Examples:

  1. 6 9/11 + 7 10/11

  2. 7 5/14 + 15 5/7

  3. 6 8/12 + 4 13/15

  4. 15 12/17 – 11 3/17

  5. 4 2/5 – 2 6/10

Acts 10:38

“You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.”

24

Action

Mario harvested 7 ½ kilograms of carrots from his vegetable garden.

He sold 3/5 of it in the market and the rest in the neighborhood. How

many kilograms were sold in the market?

Use this mathematical sentence:

3/5 of 7 ½ = 3/5 x 7 ½ = N

25

Analysis

How did you solve the problem?

What steps did you make?

26

Activity

Direction: Change the mixed fraction to improper fraction before

multiplying. Reduce the product in simplest form.

1. ½ x2 ¼ =

2. 3 1/5 x 2/4 =

3. 4/5 x 2 1/3 =

4. 5 x 4 2/3 =

5. 3 2/3 x 5/6 =

27

Generalization

To multiply simple fractions and mixed fractions, do the following:

 Change the mixed fraction to improper fraction.

 Get the GCF of any of the numerator and denominator. Simplify by

cancellation.

 Multiply the numerator by the numerator, the denominator by the

denominator.

 Express the product in simplest form.

28

Application

Find the product. Write the answer in simplest form.

1. 1/3 x 2 ¼ =

2. 4 ½ x 1/5 =

3. 3 x 2 2 /4 =

4. 2 4/7 x 5 1/6 =

5. 3 ½ x 5 2/3 =
