The Metric System
The metric system was designed as a way to standardize measurement and make conversions easier.
Before metrics units of measure many units were based off of body parts and so they commonly changed.
Standards were placed in city centers to compare to and often could be changed to short change peasants.
5
Based on Units of Ten
Since Metrics are based on units of 10 all conversions are simply done by sliding a decimal point.
All we need to determine the number of times the decimal point moves is to know how many units we have moved along the Metric Ladder.
6
7
A prefix is the beginning part of a word. In the Metric System it tells you how many of that unit you have.
Notice they are all divisible by 10!
8
Kilo means 1000 of a unit. Think large!
Kilometer (km) = 1000 meters
Kiloliter (kL) = 1000 liters
Kilogram (kg) = 1000 grams
9
Milli means 1/1000th of a unit. Think tiny!
Millimeter (mm) = 1/1000th of a meter
Milliliter (mL) = 1/1000th of a liter
Milligram (mg) = 1/1000th of a gram

The Meter is the base unit used to measure length or distance. It is a little a more the height of a doorknob.
Kilometer (1000 meters) is a large unit (over 1/2 a mile).
Centimeter (1/100th of a meter) is a small unit (about the width of your pinky).
Millimeter (1/1000th of a meter) is very small (as thick as a dime).

Which of the following measurements are SI units of length?
Meters

28
Volume is the amount of space matter takes up.
The base unit is the Liter.
Liters and milliliters are the most commonly used units.
29
Tools for Volume
If you want precise measurements use a Graduated Cylinder
A Beaker is a good tool when you don't have to have an exact amount.

The definition of Volume is:
The distance between 2 points
Amount of space a liquid takes up
Amount of matter in an object
A reading of a point in time
Measure of the average energy of particles

Mass is the amount of matter in an object.
Scales and Balances are often used to measure mass. It is sometimes confused with weight which is different.
The SI unit for mass is the kilogram (Kg).
The base unit for mass is the gram.
Grams, kilograms, and milligrams are all commonly used.

41
Temperature
Measure of the average energy of particles. The faster the particles move, the "warmer" it is.
The tool we use to measure is called a thermometer.
The SI unit is the kelvin. In science we commonly use degrees Celsius as the unit.

Time
The SI unit for time is the second (s).
Time can be converted into minutes, hours, days, years, etc...
It is not metric so it is not based on 10- except things smaller than a second. Example: Millisecond is 1/1000 of a second.
