EARTH SYSTEMS
Lesson 1 : What are Earthś Major Systems
By: Mrs. Asmi Abdul Latheef
Academic Year : 2021-2022
2
1.Explore Earth’s major systems, including the biosphere, atmosphere,Geosphere and hydrosphere.
2. Compare and contrast characteristics of each layer of the geosphere, and investigate geologic processes that shape
Earth’s surface.
3
Earth systems
1)Systems : A group of parts working together to perform a function
2)The four major Subsystems (parts) working together as one complex system : Biosphere,Atmosphere,Hydrosphere, Geosphere
3) All parts (spheres ) are connected to Each others
4) Everything on Earth can be placed into one of these spheres
INTRODUCTION
4
There are four major systems on Earth:
Geosphere (such as rock, Soil)
Atmosphere (air)
Biosphere (living Things)
Hydrosphere (water)

GEOSPHERE
Geo means ground
It is the layer that mainly consists of the rocks, soils and sediments on Earth.
Most of the geosphere is found in the interior of the Earth and not on the surface where we can see it.
Includes solid rocks (mountains )and liquid rocks ; below earth surface (magma), volcanos etc
9
BIOSPHERE
bio means life
The biosphere is all parts of and around the planet Earth where life can be found.
the biosphere includes all living things from plants , animals ,fungi ,bacteria and any place you can find life on or around Earth.
10
HYDROSPHERE
Hydro means Water
The system that represent all the Water in and on and around the Earth
The hydrosphere includes water in all forms
Solid : ice,glaciers
Liquid : river , ocean, lakes , groundwater Etc
Gas : vapour, fog, clouds
11
ATMOSPHERE
Atmo means air
It is the system that represents the air surrounding the Earth.

Write down any 5 observations about:
What do you see? What’s going on outside today? What do you see happening in nature? Have you noticed any changes in nature around your home or school?

GEOSPHERE
Most of the geosphere is found in the interior of the Earth and not on the surface where we can see it.
The geosphere includes only non living stuffs
19
Layers of Geosphere
The geosphere is 4 layers starting from the surface to the inside
20

Now try to find out any one point about each layer and write down in the given paper and stick it on the board.
(the first 3 will be rewarded)
21
Crust (The thinnest layer, has temp of 0⁰C and the one visual to our eyes, like the rocks, mountains, soil, sand, etc..)
Mantle (The thickest layer, has a temp of a 1000⁰C, made up mainly of semisolid rocks which is why it holds most of the Earth’s mass in it).
Outer core (Extremely hot about 4000⁰C, made up of liquid iron [hot magma] and dense elements).
Inner core (The hottest layer about 5,500⁰C and made up of dense elements like iron and nickel).

23
ROCK CYCLE
Now Lets watch an Edpuzzle video about Rocks and Rock cycle
https://edpuzzle.com/media/617c55e4ca3d77418625c917
24
The rock cycle is the long, slow journey of rocks down from Earth's surface and then back up again.
25
There are 3 Types of Rocks
1) Igneous rocks
which are made up from hot magma that erupts from volcanoes and later on solidify and turn into rocks.
Example of this rock is Granite that is used for home floors. Igneous rocks are 2 kinds:
Intrusive igneous rocks that result from magma staying inside the volcano without erupting and solidifying there.
Extrusive igneous rocks that result from magma erupting outside the volcano and solidifying there.
26
2.Sedimentary rocks
which are formed either as fragments of minerals, dust of rocks and other living matter accumulate with each other. Eg sandstone, limestone
3. Metamorphic rocks
are formed of igneous and sedimentary rocks when a lot of heat and pressure are applied on them. This process needs a lot of time and that’s why it is a rare and expensive rock like marble.
27
Multiple Choice
Granite is an example for
Igneous rocks
Sedimentary rocks
Metamorphic rocks
28
Students are asked to prepare a chart based on different types of rocks

34
The Living Sphere
The biosphere is all of the living things on Earth, from the smallest, microscopic organism to the largest animal—the blue whale.
35
36
The biosphere can be organized into different parts.
A population is all the individuals of the same species living in an area at the same time. A community is a group of different populations living in an area at the same time.
37

38
Organisms in the biosphere are dependent on each other. Their interactions contribute to a cycle of energy and matter.
39
Biotic and Abiotic Factors
Abiotic factors are the non-living factors in an environment such as temperature, light, water, and nutrients.
Biotic factors are living organisms that are part of an environment.
Together abiotic and biotic factors make up our surroundings.

41
Food chains
The order in which organisms, or living things, depend on each other for food. Every ecosystem, or community of living things, has one or more food chains. Most food chains start with organisms that make their own food, such as plants.

46
How matter and energy are recycled
Unlike energy, matter is recycled in ecosystems. Decomposers release nutrients when they break down dead organisms. nutrients are taken up by plants through their roots. nutrients pass to primary consumers when they eat the plants.
Energy always flows through ecosystem
47
48
49
Atmosphere
It is the system that represents the air surrounding the Earth.
50
Lets Watch a Video
https://youtu.be/UXh_7wbnS3A
51
Different Layers That Makeup the Atmosphere
52
Troposphere layer we live in, the closest to Earth extends about 10 km up, where weather happens.
Stratosphere extends for 25 km above the troposphere, has the ozone layer which traps the UV rays to protect the Earth from their harm and thus store a lot of heat in this sphere. Airplanes fly in this layer.
53
54
Mesosphere the coldest layer where it reaches a temp of -130⁰F, extends about 100 km above the stratosphere. The layer where meteors catch on fire.
Thermosphere the hottest layer where temp reaches 5000⁰F because of it trapping all the solar radiation, extends to about 400 km above the mesosphere.
Exosphere the last layer, it doesn’t have a real edge, it only fades out and when we cross it we become officially in outer space. Satellites orbit the Earth in this layer.

Atmospheric pressure
As altitude increases, pressure decreases because air density decreases as we go above sea level.

HYDROSPHERE
The system that represent all the Water in and on and around the Earth
61
62
63
Fresh water is found in glaciers, lakes, reservoirs, ponds, rivers, streams, wetlands and even groundwater.
64
Runoffs that happen when rain is not absorbed by the Earth’s surface, instead it flows downhill and pours into a water body.
Ground water: where water is absorbed by the soil and stored underground in a reservoir we call as aquifer. This kind of fresh water can be extracted from underground by the use of a pump.
Glaciers: which represent the biggest portion of fresh water on Earth and are usually formed on mountains tops because of snow accumulating there. These ice sheets when temperature rises will melt and water will flow downhill till reaching a water body or will be absorbed underground.
65

How can we save the fresh water on Earth?
