​What is it

​Using your bare hands, you will be able to separate the components of different sizes, colors, and shapes. For example, when you have a basket full of colored clothes. You have to separate clothes with different colors from the white ones to avoid discoloration. You do the same method when you separate all the coins inside a piggy bank, according to their value so

that, it will be easy for you to count them all. Through handpicking, you an easily get and see the things you need. You can simply separate or take out the impurities from the mixture by just using your hand and gets your work done.

​Mixtures with big and fine components can be separated through sieving. This involves using a sieve, strainer or a big screen to separate the components of mixtures. At home, when your mother bakes breads and cakes, she uses a sieve with tiny holes to make the flour pure and refine so that it will be smooth and lighter when mixing it with the other ingredients.

​Metals are attracted to magnets, while non-metals are not. The use of magnets is a good way to separate metals from non- metals. Big junkshops used big magnets to separate scrap metals from other non-metal components. Recycling scrap metals is a good business by

turning it into cash. They also help save the environment as the junk owners practice segregation with recyclables separated by type. Many of the substances we use every day were actually once part of a mixture. Someone somewhere separated that substance from the mixture so we could use it. It turns out that many components aren't found in nature in their pure form, but are found as parts of mixtures. Separating substances from mixtures is an important part of our daily activities in order to get the important components that we need.

​Decantation is a technique used in separating less dense substance from a denser one. When the components are separated, the less dense substance can be removed by scooping using a spoon or it can be removed by slowly pouring out the less dense substance. The purpose of these two techniques may be either to produce a clean decant or purified water. It gives benefits to us especially in the community like our home or school.

Oil and Water Experiment

You will need:

  • Glass jam jars (with secure lids if you want to shake them)

  • Jug of water

  • Vegetable oil

  • Dishwashing detergent

  • Food colouring

  • Small container

  • Syringes or pipettes

  • A cloth for accidental spills

  • Optional: Table salt

​Put one cup of water into your glass jar.

2. Pour half a cup of vegetable oil on top of the water in the jar.

Repeat this progress as many times as you like.
